There
is an alarming increase in the number of people affected
by HIV/AIDS in India, with an estimated
51 lakhs (5.1 million) affected by the disease. The state
of Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as its capital is second
in the country for numbers affected with about 4 lakhs (400,000)
affected by the disease.
HIV/AIDS affects individuals of all ages,
sex and social status. This is reflected in the significant
number of women and children affected by the disease in
India. HIV is spreading rapidly from urban to rural areas
and from high-risk groups to the general population.
