A summary study by Duke Jeyaraj Spain’s David Villa is turning to be the hero of World Cup 2010.
Today we will study a book written by a ‘son of David’ (1:1). But it was not written by Solomon in full. Someone used his writings to create this book under the Holy Spirit’s inspiration. 1:12 – it would be odd for Solomon to say that he was the king. There was never a time, when Solomon was not king of Israel after having taken over. The title Ecclesiastes comes from the Vulgate (the Latin translation of the Bible) and the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the OT) translations of the Hebrew word qoheleth, which is translated in the NIV as ‘the teacher’ The teacher’s words are arranged into three cycles: 1:3 to 3:8 What does man gain? 3:9 to 6:7 What does the worker gain? 6:8 to 12:7 What advantage has a wise man? Or What does a wise man gain? A person like you – “I hate life” (2:17) 2:18 – “I hate all the things I toiled for.” 2:23 – “Even at night his mind does not rest” (2:23 NIV). Man’s search for meaning. The Man is called “Quester” by Eugene Peterson. 1:1-2 |

JESUS HAD WHAT SURAJ RANDIV DIDN'T - Duke Jeyaraj |
Harsha Bhogle is one of my favorite Cricket Commentators. His comments about Suraj Randiv deliberate no-ball in the India-Sri Lanka One Day International on 16 August 2010 to leave Sehwag stranded on 99 wowed me. Here they are: As he grows into the game Suraj Randiv will realize grace and competitiveness can go together. He achieved little with that intentional no-ball but lost a lot (The Times of India, August 18, 2010). Harsha's words made me recall the uncommon personality of the One I Worship - Jesus Christ. Jesus had in his character what Suraj Randiv did not in this case. Jesus showed that grace and competitiveness (sternness) can go together. That is what Paul was talking about when he wrote: Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God; sternness to those who fell and kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness (Rom 11:22). He was called the Lion (who could growl with words of warning and judgement against sin). And yet he was the Lamb (who was gentle when he was pinned on the cross as a substitute for those very sins he growled against). He showed grace when the woman caught red-handed in adultery was brought to him, by saying, "The one among you without sin would throw the first stone on her!" And after everyone left, he growled at her, so to speak, by saying, "Leave your life of sin!" Would you invite this balanced Jesus in your life and 'learn from him'?

THE FIRST TIME I PREACHED.... KNEE KNOCKING AND KNOCKING OUT SOMEONE! Duke Jeyaraj |
|
I write this piece as a grateful man. I am grateful to my Creator. And my classmates. August 9 is a special day in my life. The reason? My birthday? Nope. The day I was Born Again?! No. It was on that dramatic I got on stage to proclaim God's Word. It happened in a special captains assembly in Ida Scudder School - 19 years ago - August 9, 1991, as a 16 year old.
I remember clearly how it all happened. After the list of captains and prefects was announced our Princi then Mr. Mathews asked School Captain Shameen to lead the assembly teaming up with the entire elected team of leaders. I remember Shameen walking up to me and asking me to share the message on that day. I agreed with my knees knocking and my heart ready to burst forth. What made Shameen walk up to me still remains a mystery. |

Friendship Day Special Article: A Friend closer than a Brother! by Duke Jeyaraj |
|
The popular TV programme Friends is a huge hit with yahoo youth. But you know what, despite the fact that many young people’s whole life revolves around their friends they are lonely. It may be unbelievable but it’s true – the lonely feeling hits even when they are rubbing shoulders with each other in a big crowd! A popular music group sang, "All alone in this world…"
To a generation for which loneliness is the best friend it’s my joy to introduce a "friend who sticks closer than a brother" (Prov 18:24). Who? Jesus. He is getting bad press these days. He is portrayed as one who lives in unapproachable light. He lives there no doubt, but hardly anyone hammers home the fact that He is an understanding Friend. We know He is God – 100%. But how many of us have celebrated the fact that He is human – also 100%. Read the last sentence again. I am not talking about a celebral understanding but a celebration of the humanity of Jesus! |

Timing: Murali's Vs The Maker's - Duke Jeyaraj |
|
Muthiah Muralidharan could not have timed his retirement better. He needed 8 wickets to become the first bowler to touch the 800 Wickets landmark in Tests in his last Test Match at Galle. He got them when he claimed the last Indian wicket to fall, that of Pragyan Ojha. It was as if he knew before hand that this would be the way his glittering Test career would end. |
